Starting in early 2026, learner drivers taking their car or motorcycle theory test will face a new kind of challenge: questions on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
This change, introduced by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in partnership with leading heart health organisations, is designed to give future drivers the knowledge and confidence to step in during an emergency — and potentially save lives.
Why This Matters
Every year, more than 40,000 people in the UK suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospital. Sadly, fewer than 1 in 10 survive. However, with immediate CPR and access to a defibrillator within just 3–5 minutes, survival rates can soar to around 70%.
Why Drivers?
Drivers are often the first on the scene at a road traffic accident or roadside emergency. Equipping learners with CPR and AED skills ensures they’re not only preparing to be safe behind the wheel, but also ready to act in a life-or-death situation until professional help arrives.
Learning the Skills
As well as preparing for the new theory test questions, learners — and anyone who drives — are encouraged to take advantage of free CPR and defibrillator training. Online guides and videos from organisations such as Resuscitation Council UK. These programmes provides clear, step-by-step instructions to help build confidence in using these lifesaving skills.
