The RAC has launched a new campaign, encouraging drivers to turn off their engines to improve air quality outside of schools.
A recent survey on engine idling (parked with engine still running) suggests that it is a widespread problem with 26% of vehicles spotted idling parked outside schools. Schools can purchase “School Clean Air Zone” banners which encourages drivers to show they care about our air.
Back in March 2019, Public Health England laid out a series of UK-wide recommendations to cut pollution – including a ban on cars idling outside school gates. And in June 2019, the Government announced it was setting its sights on toughening up rules on vehicle idling, with heavier fines for drivers.
The Department for Transport has also stated that vehicle idling is a major factor in poor air quality, particularly in areas where there are large numbers of stationary vehicles.
Changes will come we all know it – so let’s do our little bit to help the air quality around our schools and anywhere else that we find ourselves stationery for while. Our children’s health will benefit and our fuel bills might be a little better. Change a habit before change hits you with a fine.
